否定式:maynot(maynt),might not(mightnt)。 疑问式:may I?等,might I?等。 否定疑问式:may I not(maynt I)?等,mightnt I?
May used to express permission(infinitive: to allow/to beallowed) May用于表示许可 (不定式:to allow/to be allowed) 一、肯定式和否定式 1、在现在时或将来时中: 第一人称 I/we may的意思可能是"我/我们得到……的许可": "I may leave the office as soon as I have finished may work. I can leave/I am allowed to leave等。 然而,I/we may/might可以用于间接引语中: "You may leave When you have finised."= He Says We may leave或: He Said We might leave... 的意思是: "I give you permission to park"("我准许你停车"。) You are allowed to park(by another authority)."(你得到(另一位权威人士的)许可停车。) You have a right to park"(你有权停车。) 说话人如果在这件事中没有权威,很可能会说, You can park here.或者You are allowed to park here. (注意:can可能有两种意思:You can park here的意思可能是:"I give you permission to park".["我允许你停车"[或者:"You have a right to park/The police will allow you to park etc."["你有权利停车。" may用于表达正式许可的例句如下(非正式场合我们用can):Candidates may not bring reference books into the exa mination room. Each voter may vote for only one candidate. You may keep the book for a month. After that you must return it to us or send us a Cheque for £5.. I allowed him to park here last week. Last term Candidates were not allowed to bring books in to the examination room. Last term theydidnt a Hllow candidates to bring books etc. In 1979 each voter was allowed to vote。 They didnt allow any voter to vote for more than one candidate. They said we might keep the book for a month. 也要用allow: Since his accident he hasnt been allowed/they havent allowed him to drive a car. Can/Could/May I use your phone? May I?比Could I? might I?(条件式)含有现在的意思时可以作为may I? 就用might(过去时)来转述。might I?转述时则不变: "May/Might I see the letter?"he said.他说:"我可以瞧一瞧那封信吗?"= He asked if he might see the letter. 2、用 can 或am/is/are allowed 表示有关许可的问句: Can he take the car out whenever he likes? Is he allowed totake the car out whenever he likes? 我们把 could 或was/were allowed用于过去时: Could the Students choose what they Wanted to Study? Were thestudents allowed to choose?准许学生们选择吗? may/might expressing possiblilty may/might 表示可能性 一、1、may/might+现在式的不定式"可以表示现在或者将来的可能性: He may/might tell his wife=Perbaps he tells/will tell his wife. He may/might emigrate=Perhaps he Will emlgrate. Ann may/might know Toms address=Perhaps Ann knows etc. He may/might be waiting at the statoa=Perhaps he is waiting at the station. He may/might he Waiting at the station when we arrive=Perhaps he will he waiting etc. Tommay lend you the money.(may读作强读式)(汤姆可能借给你钱吧。) Tommight lend you the money.(might读作强读式)(汤姆或许会借给你钱吧。) 然而,用过去时的动词引导句子时,就必须用 might: I knew we might have to wait at the frontier. He said he might hire a car(间接引语). He told me he migh the passing through our town in a few woeks.(间接引语)他告诉我过几个星期他可能要经过我们的城市。 He may/might not believe your story=Perhaps he wont/doesnt believe your story. 疑问式通常用 do you think? Do you think the plane will be late? Is itlikely that the plane will be late? Is the plane likely to be late? 表示可能性决不引出一个句子,但可以往后放: when may we expect you? What may be the result of the new tax? When are you likely to arrive? When do you think youll arrive? Might they be waiting outside the station。 Could they be waiting?和 Do you think they are waiting? Do you think he may/might not he able to pay? He may/might have gone=It is possib that he went/has gone或者Perhaps he went/has gone. 如上所述,主要动词是过去时的时候,必须用might: He said/thought that shemight have missed the plae. 令人怀疑的情况不再存在时,必须用 might,而不用 may: He Came home alone. You shoudnt have let him do that;he might have got lost. You Shouldnt have drunk the wine:it may/might have been drugged. it might have been drugged这话可能有同样的意思。 事情尚未经过检验时,也可用 might,而不用 may 象在下列各句中就用 might: Perhaps we shoud have taken the other road.it might have been quicker. Its a good thing you didnt lend him the money. You might never have got it back. If we had taken the other road,we might have arrived earlier. 三、may/might可以用在条件句里代替 will/would以表示可能的而不是肯定的结果: If he sees you he will stop. (肯定的) If he sees you he may stop. (可能的) may/might can also be used(in affirmative only)in the following ways may/might 还可以用于下列各种情况(只限于肯定句中): 一、在may/might as well词组中: "I may/might as well+不定式"是不很强调意图的一种表达方式。may/might as well可以与其他人称连用,对某种行为提出建议或予以推荐: I may/might as well start at once. you may/might as well come with me. He said that I might as well apply forthe job. might just as well的意思是"不妨"用于建议采取另一可选择的行为。 Ill go on Monday by train. You might just as well wait till Tuesday and go by plane. 表明说话人劝别人听从他的话很有把握,大体上相当于"祈使句+will you": You might Post these for me=Post these for me,will you. Please tell me/do tell me what he said(请你告诉我/务必要告诉我他所说的话。)或者I am annoyed that he doesnt pay/you should have told me etc.(你还没有告诉我,我很恼火/你应当早告诉我…… mjght还可以与其他人称连用表示这种气愤: he might pay us、(他该把钱付给我们。) We are annoyed that he doesnt pay/hasnt paid us.(我们因他没有付款/未曾付款而感到恼火。) You might have warned us that the bull was dangerous. We think that you should have warned us(but you didnt) you might have told us`earlier. May heaven reward you=I hope heaven will reward you.
